Despite the Italian name which literally translated means water wall, Aquamura is a very British product manufactured by family business H.S. Bassett of Swansea.
Aquamura was first conceived as a tongued and grooved panelling system for cladding the walls of large commercial buildings. The 600mm wide panels could easily be installed by one person, and the end result provided a hygienic, waterproof and easily maintained solution that also looked good.
Recognising that the properties of Aquamura are ideal as a replacement for tiles in domestic showers, larger panels were introduced to avoid the need for joins. The edges of these "shower panels" are square cut, and one of the long edges is finished to match the face décor, thus no end trims are required.
Fast forward to 2011 and shower panels are now widely used and specified, and copycat products are flooding onto the market. With the launch of the latest Aquamura colour collections it is a timely reminder to look closely at the construction of Aquamura compared to its rivals.
The core board is Birch Plywood which is strong yet light in weight and cuts very cleanly. Don’t be fooled by offers of "Waterproof" or "Exterior" MDF cores, and if it says Plywood is it Birch ply, or a cheaper Far Eastern ply? It may not seem important now, but the thought of having to replace panels that have failed after a few months use is certainly unpleasant. Also check if one of the edges of the shower panel comes finished to match the face or will you need to use a metal or plastic end trim?
